Mubadala Investment Company, the Abu Dhabi-based sovereign investor, has extended their conservation partnership in collaboration with the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund (MBZ Fund) to support biodiversity globally.
The selected projects are implemented by trusted and experienced local conservation partners, supported by Mubadala and its assets, under the management of the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund. Each local partner has been carefully chosen for their passion, skills, and in-depth knowledge of specific species, making them ideally equipped to help turn the tide against the extinction crisis.
Phase 1 (2021 – 2024)
During phase 1, outreach efforts have engaged over 300,000 individuals through various events and campaigns. Local communities have benefited from improved access to medical services, education, employment opportunities, ecotourism, and alternative livelihoods. Impressively, 60% of the projects are led by women to align with our women empowerment engagement goals. There was a minimum of 30% female participation in field research and an incredible 25,000 youths have been educated on species conservation to fulfil our passion for youth education.
Phase 2 (2026 – 2027)
Continuing our efforts from Phase 1, we will continue to manage human-wildcat conflicts in Indonesia and address habitat destruction and poaching to protect Thailand’s Siamese crocodiles and otters. Phase 2 will also focus on cultivating future conservation leaders in the UAE, inspired by the success of our small grants program. We aim to establish a local initiative that empowers hands-on conservationists in our communities. We’re also excited to announce a major Dugong and Seagrass conservation initiative across five countries: UAE, Indonesia, Malaysia, Timor-Leste, and Thailand. This builds on the success of our 2015-2019 Dugong & Seagrass Conservation Project.
