At this time of year in the UAE, nature offers a clear reminder of what we must to protect.

Dugong mothers guide their calves through shallow seagrass meadows. Sea turtles begin to nest along our shores. Migratory birds pass through on journeys that span continents. Seabirds gather on offshore islands to breed. These are delicate, interconnected cycles that depend on stable and healthy environments.

This Earth Day, the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund is proud to highlight its collaboration with The National Aquarium in Abu Dhabi through the Seas of Change initiative. The program encourages young people and families to make simple but meaningful commitments: to learn about marine life, to share knowledge, and to take part in protecting the ocean. Already, more than 5,000 children have made these pledges, demonstrating the power of awareness to inspire action.

At the MBZ Fund, we have always believed that conservation starts with people.

At the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund, we support those working to protect species on the ground. But lasting conservation also depends on awareness. When people understand the value of the ecosystems around them, they are more likely to protect them. That is how change begins, and how it endures.

The Seas of Change initiative reflects this principle. It connects people directly to the marine environments around them and reinforces a simple idea: the ocean is not distant. It is part of our identity, our heritage, and our future.

At the same time, these ecosystems are under increasing pressure from coastal development, pollution, climate change, and, in some cases, the risk of environmental damage linked to ongoing conflict in the region.

This is why building awareness, especially among younger generations, is so important.

This Earth Day, we are reminded that conservation is a shared responsibility. Each of us has a role to play, whether by supporting conservation efforts, changing daily habits, or helping others understand what is at stake.

Nature does not ask for perfection. But it does require commitment.

And that commitment begins with a promise.
