The lungless salamanders as the Southern Giant Salamander live in humid environments like the cloud forest of the Mixteca region in Oaxaca. Unfortunately, huge areas of forest have been lost or disturbed because of anthropogenic activities as coffee plantations. This project aims to generate knowledge about the ecology of this species in modified and pristine areas to develop a forestry management plan.

The objective of our project is to ensure the persistence of Bombina pachypus in Liguria (NW Italy) through habitat restoration and the establishment of new populations. The project is a continuation of the funded project n. 152510524, achieving all stated objectives: we clarified the causes of the species decline, identified new populations, developed and tested a sustainable reintroduction method, carried out releases and habitat management.

Ambohitantely Special Reserve in Madagascar is the only remaining patch of humid forest on the central plateau north of the capital Antananarivo. The remaining 3,000Ha of forest is home to two site endemic Critically Endangered frog species: Anilany helenae and Anodonthyla vallani. This project seeks to undertake the first population assessment of each species as a basis for long-term monitoring.
