Conservation of Humboldtia bourdillonii, an endangered Tree Endemic to the Western Ghats Biodiversity Hotspot
The populations of Humboldtia bourdillonii should be located and mapped in the Western Ghats forest areas. The primary research is to identify the major threats or constraints this species faces in its natural habitat. There can be ecological, reproductive, and genetic reasons for the endangerment of this species. Genetic constraints can be identified by studying population genetics with the help of specific markers. Ecological niche modelling is an effective tool for the conservation of endangered species. Through niche modelling, we can estimate the effect of climate change on the geographic distributions of the target species. It also helps to assess the distribution of the species in present and future scenarios. The ethnobotanical importance of this species is also to be studied. The IUCN has developed a new global standard of assessment called the Green Status of Species, which indicates how well a species is doing within the ecological system in which it lives and how much it has recovered as a result of conservation efforts. We are planning to assess the green status of this rare species. We are also planning to conduct awareness programs such as seminars and educational campaigns with the active participation of local communities.
This grant is funded as part of our Fonseca Leadership Program which was established by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). This fund supports young conservationists from developing countries.
