The project has secured some funding that will support planning the Tradouw redfin translocation, including assessing farm dams and upstream river sections, surveying macroinvertebrate communities, conducting risk assessments, and developing a site-specific translocation plan. This work established the foundation for assisted colonisation but does not include extensive genetic analysis, long-term monitoring, or outreach to raise awareness of the species and its protection. The proposed project builds on this work by: 1. Conducting genetic analyses with SAIAB to ensure translocated populations maintain genetic diversity and long-term viability. 2. Supporting ongoing monitoring of founder populations to track survival, adaptation, and the ecological impact on macroinvertebrate communities to ensure no harm to ecosystem structure. 3. Identifying additional refuge sites upstream or in secure farm dams free from invasive bass to expand the species’ resilience. 4. Raising awareness of the Tradouw redfin, its conservation status, and the importance of protecting its habitat through community engagement, educational programs, and targeted outreach. This funding will strengthen the evidence base for translocation, reduce extinction risk, safeguard macroinvertebrate communities, and enhance the overall success of the recovery strategy for the Critically Endangered Tradouw redfin.
