Dancing Through Decline: Ecological Insights and Conservation of Micrixalus adonis in the Western Ghats.

This project investigates the ecology, habitat preferences, and distribution of the Micrixalus adonis in Munnar, Western Ghats. Combining field surveys, water quality analysis, and community knowledge, the study assesses threats such as Chytridiomycosis while promoting local awareness. The project aims to generate key ecological insights to support effective conservation of this unique and understudied amphibian species.

The Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund supports this project focused on the ecology and conservation of the Micrixalus adonis in the Western Ghats landscape of Munnar, India, an important global hotspot for amphibian diversity. The study aims to understand the species’ ecology, habitat preferences, and distribution patterns, while also assessing emerging threats such as Chytridiomycosis. Fieldwork includes systematic surveys, habitat assessments, and water quality monitoring near perennial streams, which are critical microhabitats for the species. Climatic variables are also being recorded to evaluate environmental influences on species presence.

Since the project began in December 2025, the species has been documented across several locations within the study area. However, direct observations have been limited due to its seasonal activity patterns. With the onset of the active period from April onwards, encounter rates are expected to increase, allowing for more robust ecological data collection.

Community engagement is a key component of this project. Local and indigenous knowledge is being incorporated to better understand species distribution and behavior. Social surveys are being conducted to assess human–species interactions, and awareness programs and training workshops are helping build local capacity for conservation and promote coexistence in areas where interactions occur. By integrating ecological research with community participation, this project seeks to generate comprehensive insights into the species’ ecological requirements and contribute to the development of effective, evidence-based conservation strategies for Micrixalus adonis in the Western Ghats.

This grant is funded as part of our Fonseca Leadership Program which was established by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). This fund supports young conservationists from developing countries.
