Conserving the Endangered Black Sumatran Langur: Community Empowerment and Habitat Protection in the Batang Toru Ecosystem
This initiative strengthens the conservation of the Black Sumatran Langur (Presbytis sumatrana) in the Batang Toru Ecosystem by generating critical baseline data and empowering local communities as conservation partners. A comprehensive field survey was conducted to assess distribution and population size, providing reliable data to guide conservation priorities, reduce knowledge gaps, and support evidence-based decision-making for species protection.
Key results include:
• Field-based distribution and population surveys
• Mapping of priority habitats within the Batang Toru landscape
• Establishment of baseline data to support conservation planning
To ensure sustainability beyond data collection, the project integrated conservation awareness with alternative livelihoods through a community-led coffee nursery program. The nursery serves as a practical awareness platform, demonstrating how conservation and income generation can work together. By providing coffee seedlings and native forest tree seedlings, and training selected villagers as community monitors, the project reduced pressure on forest areas while building local capacity for species monitoring and conservation leadership.
Key results include:
• Coffee nursery established as a conservation awareness and livelihood tool
• Reduced community reliance on forest-based activities
• Local villagers trained to monitor the species and lead conservation actions
This grant is funded as part of our Fonseca Leadership Program which was established by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). This fund supports young conservationists from developing countries.
