Assessing and conserving a threatened cliff carnivorous plant in the Sierra Madre Oriental
Pinguicula gracilis is a threatened carnivorous plant endemic to the limestone cliffs of Mexico’s Sierra Madre Oriental. This project combines field surveys, drone mapping, habitat protection, and community engagement to assess its conservation status, reduce threats, and develop a long-term conservation strategy while promoting coexistence between biodiversity conservation and outdoor recreation.
Pinguicula gracilis is a rare carnivorous plant found exclusively on limestone cliffs within the Sierra Madre Oriental of northeastern Mexico. Despite its ecological uniqueness and restricted distribution, very little is known about its population status, habitat requirements, or the threats affecting its long-term survival.
This project aims to generate the scientific knowledge and conservation actions necessary to safeguard this remarkable species and the cliff ecosystems it inhabits. Using a combination of field surveys and drone-based mapping, we will identify and document existing populations across inaccessible cliff environments. Standardized monitoring will be used to assess population size, reproductive success, habitat quality, and potential threats.
Beyond research, the project seeks to implement practical conservation measures directly in the field. These include protecting key microhabitats, installing educational signage, and promoting responsible recreational practices in areas where climbing and other outdoor activities occur near sensitive habitats.
A central component of the project is collaboration with local stakeholders. By engaging climbers, landowners, protected area managers, students, and volunteers, we aim to foster a shared stewardship approach that supports both biodiversity conservation and sustainable access to cliff environments.
The project will establish the first comprehensive baseline dataset for Pinguicula gracilis and produce science-based recommendations for its long-term management and protection. At the same time, it will help strengthen local conservation capacity by training young researchers and citizen scientists in cliff ecology, species monitoring, and habitat assessment.
Ultimately, this initiative seeks not only to conserve a unique carnivorous plant but also to highlight the ecological importance of Mexico’s cliff ecosystems, which remain among the least studied and least protected habitats in the country.
