Engaging Indigenous Communities on Chinese Pangolin Conservation in Eastern Nepal: Local Monitoring and Awareness Initiatives
The project aims to conserve the critically endangered Chinese pangolin in eastern Nepal in close coordination with local indigenous communities, community forest user groups, local government and schools. It will train local youth to conduct habitat monitoring through sign surveys and transect walks to collect data on pangolin distribution. Another objective is to organise conservation education and awareness programs for students and local communities. The project will also document Indigenous ecological knowledge of pangolins through video recordings, helping to preserve traditional knowledge. In addition, community-managed pangolin trails will be established to support low-impact ecotourism, raise awareness, and provide alternative livelihood opportunities. We believe these locally focused conservation activities will provide the information related to pangolin distribution, conservation status and support government's conservation priority areas in a long-term.
This grant is funded as part of our Fonseca Leadership Program which was established by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). This fund supports young conservationists from developing countries.
