Protecting the cat of the clouds: threat mitigation and monitoring of clouded tiger cats in the Western Andes of Colombia.
To establish a conservation program of the clouded tiger-cat in our target landscape by implementing: 1)conservation agreements with local poultry producers by building four chicken coops, 2)vaccination and neutering of 100 domestic dogs, 3) creation of an engaging theatrical education program and implementation in four rural schools, and 4)establish a community-based monitoring of clouded tiger cats via camera traps and applied workshops. Conservation agreements will consist of creating or improving chicken coops against small cat attacks and provide two hens for producers once they demonstrate commitment for not killing the small cats. We will focus neutering and vaccination of domestic dogs in areas of greater contact with clouded tiger cat to minimize attacks and the risk of disease transmission. We will create a pedagogic puppet show to impart concepts in rural school children for helping them take an active role in clouded tiger-cat monitoring, conservation and pet welfare. Through camera trap monitoring, we will determine the effectiveness of the implementation of chicken coops and the skills of our trained children to study small wild cats in their natural habitats. This camera trap survey will also provide information of potential contact between domestic dogs and clouded tiger-cats.
