Assessing population, habitat use, and threats of Critically Endangered Cora Mud Turtle (Kinosternon cora).
Assessing population, habitat use, and threats of Endangered Cora Mud Turtle (Kinosternon cora).
The Cora Mud Turtle (Kinosternon cora) was formally described less than five years ago (Loc-Barragán et al. 2020), and it has already been classified as Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to serious threats such as illegal wildlife trade and the loss of freshwater habitats (Loc-Barragán et al. 2025, in press). So far, ony have documented only 47 individuals in the wild. These records have helped expand our understanding of the species’ distribution and physical characteristics (Loc-Barragán & Iverson 2025, in press). However, very little is still known about its life history, behavior, or long-term survival prospects. This rare turtle is endemic to western Mexico, living only along the Pacific Coastal Plain between Sinaloa and Nayarit. It has been found in just 15 localities, with an estimated distribution of about 8,895 km² but an actual area occupied of only 4,093 km² (TTWG 2025, in press). Because so much about K. cora remains unknown, long-term monitoring is essential. Through this research, we aim to identify the threats it faces, better understand its ecological needs, and support actions that will help ensure the species’ survival in the wild.
This grant is funded as part of our Fonseca Leadership Program which was established by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). This fund supports young conservationists from developing countries.
