This project focuses on the Daisy Stingray (Fontitrygon margarita) and Pearl Stingray (Fontitrygon margaritella). Fontitrygon margarita is classified as Endangered by IUCN on the basis of a significant decline that is likely to continue as a result of persistent intensive and unregulated fishing pressure. Fontitrygon margaritella which is sympatric with F. margarita is listed as Data Deficient due to the uncertainty of the catch levels and utilization of this species as well as lack of knowledge of its biology. There are no specific conservation measures in place for these species and they also remain poorly studied. 

This project to be implemented at Cape Three Points in the Ahanta West District of Ghana will: (i) Estimate population size and current conservation status of Fontitrygon margarita and F. margaritella by comparing historical population data with landing site information; (ii) Enhance the capacity of local people to conduct independent systematic surveys to monitor and document population of F. margarita and F. margaritella at fisheries landing sites; (iii) Educate and distribute educational materials  to local people about the plight of elasmobranchs; and (iv) Institute strict traditional conservation governance protocols to reduce the impacts of fisheries practices on population and habitat quality of F. margarita and F. margaritella.
