Conservation of a newly recorded population of fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrinus) at Peam Krasaop Wildlife Sanctuary, south west Cambodia (continuation)
The project is currently working to provide support, training and monitoring capabilities to PKWS rangers. PKWS authorities are keen on the project training rangers on species research and collaborating through the use of new technologies such as SMART. The project also continues to work on spreading awareness and promoting community-based conservation in fishing cat areas. No retaliatory or accidental killings were reported during 2017 or 2018 and, while we can not assure they did not happen, we believe that continued project presence and activities, as well as further involvement of local communities in fishing cat conservation is paramount to the persistence of the population. Ecological research on the fishing cat population is providing results on abundance, distribution and dispersal. We are surveying remote areas of the mangrove islands and have started suveying mainland areas. Fishing cats are being individually identified to provide detailed results on population abundance and density.
