The immediate goals of the project are to estimate the extent of movements by individual giant freshwater stingrays and to know how many jurisdictions (provinces) individual stingrays cover with their movements. These estimations will allow to produce effective management plans, as they will inform on the scale at which fisheries are having an effect, and on the level of integration needed between provinces for effective management. This project aims to tag giant freshwater stingrays in the middle and lower Paraná River. The main expected outcome of the project is an estimation of the extent of individual movements along the river, This outcome will be instrumental to answer the following questions: (1) Do giant freshwater stingrays conduct long migrations?; (2) Do giant freshwater stingrays remain within jurisdictional boundaries, or do they cross provincial limits? Answering the first question is important to know the spatial scale on which fisheries management and conservation plans should be implemented. Answering the second question is relevant because, in Argentina, inland fishery resources are managed by provincial rather than the federal government. Therefore, knowing how many provinces share the same individuals is necessary to coordinate management actions among provinces, if necessary.
