Promoting the discovery and conservation of the endangered Giant ground pangolin (Smutsia gigantea) in the Kyabobo National Park, Ghana

This project seeks to contribute to conserving the endangered GGP in the KNP through a citizen science approach. Ultimately, the project will provide baseline information on the existence of the GGP for establishing a community-based conservation program to mitigate the hunting of the species and prevent extinction. Specifically, the project will. 1. Assess the existence, occupancy, estimated population, habitat preference, and threats of the GGP through field surveys and camera trapping. The project will contribute firsthand data on the endangered GGP in KNP for long-term monitoring of the species 2. Assess and monitor threats to the species in and outside the park creating baseline information for conservation planning and as a reference for future studies. 3. Raise awareness on the conservation of the GGP and identify interventions to mitigate hunting through community engagement, conservation evangelism sessions, and household interviews. 4. Build locals’ capacity through community awareness that will contribute to safeguarding the GGP from extinction. Locals will be educated on the conservation status of the species and the need for conservation. 5. Identify and train 10 people; 5 local hunters, and 5 members of the general local community as conservation stewards against hunting outside the KNP. A pangolin conservation task force will also be initiated.
