Conservation of the endemic and endangered parrotfish Scarus tripsonosus in Brazilian water - Research and community based actions

Conservation of the endemic and endangered parrotfish Scarus tripsonosus in Brazilian water - Research and community based actions.

The present project will be accomplished by the Reef Conservation Project "Projeto Conservação Recifal (PCR)". A renowned project in the conversation of reef environmental successfully in Brazil for years. The "Projeto Conservação Recifal (PCR)" (Reef Conservation Project) is headquartered in the city of Tamandaré and coordinated by the proponent of this project (Pedro H. C. Pereira).

The project will aim to:

- determine the spatial and temporal distribution of the Greenback Parrotfish (Scarus trispinosus) and correlate data of habitat use and species life phase.

- perform underwater observation of the species feeding behavior. Feeding rates (bites/minute) will be also analysed in different substratum and correlated with their bite size meanwhile feeding on corals. By that we will be able to better understand the ecological role of Scarus trispinosus on Brazilian coral reefs.

 - document traditional ecological knowledge of the greenback parrotfish with local community and also monitor the fishing intensity of the species in the present

- promote awareness of the importance of the protection of corallivorous excavating parrotfishes that play major roles in reef dynamics and sedimentation using the Greenback Parrotfish (Scarus trispinosus) as flagship species;
