Malagarasi river catchment represents one of the largest and most significant transboundary natural ecosystems in Africa. The catchment constitutes about one third of the catchment area of Lake Tanganyika and contains ecosystems of both national and international importance. It has been increasingly said that increased anthropogenic activities have had negative impacts to Malagarasi catchment including fisheries resources (Kashaigili, 2010). Agricultural expansion continues to be the main driver of deforestation, forest fragmentation and the associated loss of forestry and (FAO and UNEP, 2020) aquatic biodiversity in water bodies. Following these challenges it’s therefore very crucial to educate the community along Malagarasi river on sustainable resource use and collaborate towards conservation of the critically endangered Karomo tilapia “Oreochromis karomo” and its habitats.
