Status of Tarsius lariang: Analyzing population, abundance, distribution and habitat characteristics in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Status of Tarsius lariang: Analyzing population, abundance, distribution, and habitat characteristics in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Tarsius lariang, a primate species endemic to Sulawesi, Indonesia. According to the IUCN, the current conservation status of T. lariang is “data deficient", and it faces forest degradation and habitat loss due to deforestation, land conversion for agriculture, and community perceptions of it as a pest. Conservation of this species is critical, as the tarsier has an ecological role as a small predator, helping to control insect populations and maintain ecosystem balance. Conservation efforts should focus on protecting its natural habitat, which is a tropical forest rich in biodiversity. These habitats support not only the lariang tarsier but also many other species, including endangered flora and fauna. Establishing protected areas and restoring damaged forests are crucial steps in ensuring the survival of the lariang tarsier. In addition, raising public awareness about the importance of conservation and the negative impacts of forest destruction is necessary. By protecting forest ecosystems, we are not only saving this species but also supporting the overall health of the environment and the sustainability of natural resources for future generations. The main objective of this project is to provide appropriate assessment information on the IUCN status of Tarsius lariang. The list of overall objectives of this project is: 1. Population surveys aimed at estimating the population size, abundance and distribution of the species 2. Habitat monitoring aims to obtain up-to-date information on habitat condition, forest area, species association with habitat and threat level. 3. Conservation education aims to provide understanding and knowledge of the protection and conservation of the T. lariang species.
