Harnessing botanical expertise in East Africa to complete conservation assessments for the region's endemic flora
Working with the IUCN/SSC Eastern African Plant Red List Authority and Tanzanian partners a red listing workshop was held in Morogoro (Tanzania) in January 2023. 114 species were given an IUCN Red List status for the first time in the workshop. Of these species, 70 were listed as threatened (8 Critically Endangered, 46 Endangered and 16 Vulnerable). We were also able to fund the attendance of young East African botanist to attend the workshop to expand their knowledge of the red listing process. We hope to apply for additional funding to initiate conservation planning of these species to facilitate effective on the ground conservation.
