Our research project aims to define the conservation status of the Mountain Tapir (Tapirus pinchaque) within the Puracé National Natural Park and surrounding area, focusing on understanding their habitat use, the impact of human-induced threats, and population dynamics. This work is critical given the species' endangered status and the ongoing challenges of habitat fragmentation and human disturbance, including roads and the presence of feral dogs. These factors possiby threaten the tapir's survival in the protected area. The purpose of our project is threefold: to assess the current population status of the Mountain Tapir within PNN Puracé using occupancy models; to understand the impact of roads on their distribution and behavior establishing a baseline to inform evidence-based infrastructure management strategies to the environmental and infrastructure goverment entities; to explore other elements of their natural history crucial for developing effective conservation strategies; to implement conservation strategies to reduce negative interactions between the Mountain tapir and humans associated to presence of roads and agricultural activities
