Red-fronted Macaw: increasing nestboxes at the Red-fronted Macaw Reserve
With MBZ support, Asociación Civil Armonía collected the first-ever temperature data from natural and artificial Red-fronted Macaw nests. Using these data, we developed and installed ten improved nest boxes that replicate natural thermal conditions, enhancing breeding opportunities. This project provides critical insights into nest ecology and strengthens long-term conservation of this Endangered species in the Community Reserve
For the first time, Asociación Civil Armonía, with support from MBZ, collected temperature data from both natural Red-fronted Macaw nests and artificial nest boxes to refine the design of new nest boxes for the Red-fronted Macaw Community Reserve. Using these data, we developed an improved nest box model and successfully installed ten new nest boxes in carefully chosen locations. Natural nests showed stable temperatures averaging 24.66 °C, while older artificial boxes experienced extreme fluctuations between 14.5 °C and 70.5 °C. Inspired by insulated containers, we added an internal polystyrene layer to the new boxes, which reduced temperature peaks and created a more stable environment. Field testing confirmed the effectiveness of this design, providing critical baseline information for this Endangered species.
The ten new nest boxes were installed near cliff centers and frequented perching areas rather than along upper cliff edges, increasing the likelihood of occupation. Eight boxes were equipped with dataloggers to monitor temperature during the 2025–2026 breeding season, while two dataloggers were placed in natural nests as reference points. Installation required professional climbers to safely place boxes on steep cliffs without disturbing the birds. This project not only improves understanding of Red-fronted Macaw nesting ecology but also provides safer, more stable nesting sites and a model for long-term conservation. The insights gained and the improved nest boxes set a precedent for enhancing artificial nesting infrastructure for other macaw populations in Bolivia, supporting adaptive management and increasing breeding success in the wild.
