Speke’s gazelle is globally endangered, one of the least known antelopes, and faces uncontrolled hunting, illegal trade, drought, and habitat loss. Only a few hundred individuals may remain in Somaliland. In Puntland state (northeastern Somalia), no systematic field surveys have been conducted since the 1980s, leaving a knowledge gap that blocks effective conservation planning.

This project will systematically survey the Nugaal Valley using vehicle transects, sign surveys (tracks, dung, browse), camera traps, and structured interviews with pastoralists (Local Ecological Knowledge). Goals include confirming the gazelle’s presence, identifying key habitats, documenting threats, and producing baseline occurrence data to support Somalia’s antelope conservation plan. A parallel aim is to strengthen collaboration with local communities and government authorities, laying the groundwork for long term, community-based monitoring.

Survey blocks were selected using historical records (Funaioli & Simonetta 1966) and recent reports. All observations are GPS georeferenced and recorded within a Quarter Degree Square grid. The project is part of SSI's Dryland Antelope Conservation Initiative (DACI), guided and endorsed by the IUCN Antelope Specialist Group and Somalia’s Federal Ministry of Environment.

Expected outcomes include presence/absence and distribution maps for Speke’s gazelle and other threatened species (Soemmerring’s gazelle, beira, dibatag), along with a threat assessment. A technical report will go to the Federal and State Ministries of Environment, IUCN ASG, the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund, other stakeholders and partners at regional, national and global levels.

Baseline data will inform future conservation actions such as community monitoring and habitat protection. The project also trains local enumerators and offers a replicable survey model for data deficient antelopes in the Horn of Africa.
