Continent: South America
Country: Brazil
Grant Amount: $10,000
Awarded Date: November 03, 2023
Population survey, molecular characterization and ex situ conservation of the endangered South American edible fungal species Rickiella edulis
Population survey, molecular characterization and ex situ conservation of the endangered South American edible fungal species Rickiella edulis Rickiella edulis is facing a high threat of extinction (Endangered) and its current population (ca. 2,000 individuals) is decreasing. It is a forestal species and its main threat is deforestation and forest fragmentation.
- Find in nature populations of Rickiella edulis, with efforts in Brazil (State of São Paulo, where it was recently discovered) and Paraguay (type locality);
- Isolate the specimens to obtain pure culture and promote ex situ conservation;
- Conduct molecular studies to characterize the Brazilian and Paraguayan populations (if found in Paraguay);
- Reevaluate, if necessary, the species status in the IUCN Red List;
- Publish main findings in scientific articles;
- Promote actions (in Brazil and Paraguay) to call the public attention to this fungal species (Science outreach).
