The proposed project aims at increasing capacities of local stakeholders to monitor and protect the tamaraw on site. This will be done through two main interrelated fields of actions: (1) Continue and expand the ongoing ecological research conducted in Mts Iglit-Baco Natural Park in order to build baseline information about the population dynamic of the park’s tamaraw subpopulation and its relation to the habitat structure and existing threats; (2) Improve rangers patrol effectiveness, resource management and personnel safety by establishing the SMART international platform system (Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool) and conservation software. SMART system will help to build on the existing protection efforts through training, skills development and technology use. It will further increase accurate biological monitoring methods and reporting systems to strengthen areas such as baseline species data, strategic planning and fundraising. SMART will also bridge critical gap in integrating a real-time communications system, with the aim of providing a means for rapid information exchange between management personnel and the field. Outcomes of these two fields of intervention will be used and subsequently extrapolated to other tamaraw sub-populations, thus ensuring an overall impact on Tamaraw conservation on the whole Mindoro Island.
