Turtles are one of the least studied species in Nepal regarding their ecology, habitat, distribution and threats. The conservation of such species largely depends on their occurrence within protected areas or on the importance given at national level. This project aims to assess the status and threats facing Critically Endangered Red-crowned Roofed turtle in an area which connects two protected areas across Nepal and India.

Nothing has been learned about the Ono-I-Lau Skink (Leiolopisma alazon)since its discovery in 1982. It was known from one very small islet in a very distant part of Fiji. Whether the species is extinct is not even known. This project will determine the current status of this species and determine conservation priorities for the species if found to still exist in the wild.

The conservation status of the 3 three described species of the Phrynops geoffroanus group and the 10 or more undescribed species in this complex are not known. Because of the delicate nature of freshwater turtles some of these species may be facing extinction now before they have even been identified. We are conducting molecular studies to define these new species.

Lygodactylus williamsi is an endemic species of gecko found in Kimboza Forest in Tanzania. The species is not in the government quota but is widely traded in the European and American pet markets. The Wildlife Division and law enforcers such as police and customs do not know the species thus TRAFFIC with support from MBZSCF conducted species identification to help them cover this knowledge gap.
