Diversity and Conservation of Dragonflies and Damselflies of the Canastra Mountains

Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation (Project No. 162514382) - Odonata - Awarded $10,000 on February 10, 2017

The main aim of this project is to assess the conservation status of the Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies) of the Canastra Mountains. New species have been described recently and more are to be found in this endemic region of the Neotropical Savannah. We plan to study the distribution of this species and identify localities and threats to the conservation of these species. This month (October 2016), the Latinamerican Odonatological Society (SOL) was founded in its first meeting and started the assessment of all Odonata species of the Neotropical Region (~2300 spp.) with IUCN to create the first red list of the latinamerican dragonflies and damselflies. Therefore, there is an urgent need to assess neglected areas such as the Canastra Mountains and our goal will provide assessment of each endemic species in these mountains to include in the upcoming red list.
