Saving Operculicarya pachypus, a threatened endemic succulent by implementing an adapted conservation strategy

Operculicarya pachypus (Endangered), a stunning endemic succulent from South West Madagascar, is among the most widely exported living plants for ornamental purposes worldwide. The species is currently known to occur in a few locations in the South-West Region of Madagascar within two Category V Protected Areas. However, reliable data on its population size, distribution, and regeneration remain scarce. Driven by increasing international demand, O. pachypus has become one of the most frequently poached plant species in Madagascar over the past decade.The overall objective of this project is to collect robust data to guide the development and implementation of adequate conservation strategies for the species. Specifically, the project aims to:1. Assess the population status of O. pachypus by estimating its size, distribution, and regeneration within its natural habitat;2. Identify and understand the threats to its habitat;3. Characterise the scale and nature of O. pachypus poaching in its habitat;4. Document local ecological knowledge related to the species.The outcomes of this project will provide comprehensive, evidence-based information to update the conservation status of O. pachypus and provide solid support for stronger legal protections for the species.
