Mohamed bin Zayed Species project number 13255464

Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation (Project No. 13255464) - Tonkin Snub-nosed monkey - Awarded $12,300 on June 28, 2013

Tonkin Snub-nosed Monkey (TSM) is confined to a few areas in far northeastern Viet Nam. Its distribution has become dramatically restricted in recent decades due to massive deforestation and intensive hunting. It is currently known only from small forest patches in Tuyen Quang, Bac Kan and Ha Giang Provinces, and to a lesser extent in Thai Nguyen Provinces.

TSM was listed in IUCN Red List as Critically Endangered because its population size is estimated to number fewer than 250 mature individuals, with no subpopulation greater than 100 mature individuals, and it is experiencing a continuing decline. This species is found in tropical evergreen forests associated with karsts limestone hills and mountains, and is largely restricted to primary forest. It has been recorded at elevations between 200 and 1,200 m. TSM are threatened throughout its range from habitat degradation and hunting pressure.

Khau Ca - Du Gia area where this project will take place contains the largest population (it was estimated about 100 individuals in 2009) of TSM. However, population ecology and habitat are poorly studied. The population is highly threatened by habitat destruction for agricultivation, timber logging, non-timber forest product harvesting and illegal wildlife hunting and trade. In order to preserve this population, strong and scientifically-based conservation approaches must be applied

This project aims to provide updated database on the species profile and ranger skill training in Khau Ca - Du Gia area. Key activities of the project are:

1. Survey for updating information on population status and current threats to TSM population

2. Study of TSM feeding ecology including identification of key food plant species, specific food selection, seasonal variation food availability

3. Evaluating quality of existing forest habitat in term of food source and refuge for TSM

4. Training staff members of Du Gia Nature Reserve on techniques of TSM survey, monitoring and conservation activities

5. Awareness education of local communities on conservation of TSM

6. Adjusting management measures to enhance survival of TSM population in Khau Ca-Du Gia Area
