Mohamed bin Zayed Species project number 182519945

Actions for long-term survival and enforcing of the wild populations of Bombina pachypus in Umbria (Central Italy)

Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation (Project No. 182519945) - Apennine Yellow-bellied Toad - Awarded $12,000 on September 01, 2022

The fundamental aim of the project is to ensure the persistence of Bombina pachypus in Umbria (Central Italy) through habitat restoration and the establishment of new populations. In particular, we have the following set of specific objectives: 1. We will clarify the role of Chytrid fungus in the decline of the species; 2. We will monitor and manage extant populations in-situ by improving extant breeding sites on the basis of scientific evidence; 3. Raising public awareness on this subject. This purpose will be reached through a proposal of visiting the natural habitats in which the target species live and breed and observing directly some phases of their life cycle. Raising public awareness is obviously necessary in order to guarantee a long-term success of the conservation interventions on Bombina pachypus.
