Mohamed bin Zayed Species project number 212524986

Assessing the conservation status of the Endangered Haploclastus kayi (Araneae: Theraphosidae) in Southern Western Ghats, India

Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation (Project No. 212524986) - Parambikulam large burrowing spider - Awarded $5,000 on January 28, 2022

Parambikulam large burrowing spider, Haploclastus kayi is an endangered species of theraphosid spider restricted to Western Ghats of India. However, very little is known about its distribution, ecology, in microhabitat choices.

The study is part of a larger project aimed at gaining greater understanding of the ecology and conservation issues of this lesser-known endangered through research to on-ground conservation activities with the support of community participation. 1) Study the status, distribution and habitat preference of H.kayi in the Kerala part of Western Ghats. 2) To explore the microhabitat characters in the possible habitats. Micro habitat parameters (vegetation cover, burrow morphology, temperature inside burrows, relative humidity) will be studied for better understanding. Increase the knowledge base on its biology and ecology. 3) To evaluate threats faced by H.kayi through direct observation and habitat characterization surveys. Assessment of anthropogenic pressures through different field survey methods. Quantification of assessed threats through statistical analysis with the help of experts. 4)Semi-structured questionnaire survey among local communities for understanding the knowledge on this species and to assess the illegal wildlife trade of H.kayi at local and national levels. 5)Awareness among Kerala Forest Department for the better facilitation of tarantulas in general with special focus to H.kayi. Building their knowledge and capacity towards tarantula identification, monitoring and thereby enhancing their interests in conservation. Also, to help them to understand more about the lesser known taxon and will increase the conservation consideration towards the tarantulas.
