Darwin's Medium Tree Finch (Camarhynchus pauper) is a critically endangered passerine only found on Floreana Island (Galapagos). Its survival is being threatened by a introduced parasitic fly whose larvae fed on finch nestlings and caused 98% nestling mortality in 2010 and 2012. This project aims to contribute to the development of control measures for the fly to secure the survival of this endangered bird.

Sharpes Longclaw (Maxronyx sharpie) is classified as Endangered. The preferred habitat for this highly specialized bird species is quickly diminishing. One of the major threats is loss of habitat due to change of land use. In 2000, only 50% of 77,000 ha of the Kinangop Plateau Grasslands remained with only 58% of these suitable as habitat for Sharpe’s Longcalw.

Forest Owlet Heteroglaux blewitti is a critically endangered Owl that is endemic to India. So far it has been reported from 2 states in India in isolated populations. Our project will focus on its ecology, demography and extent of its distribution. The findings of the project will be used in planning long-term conservation for the species in India.

The Endangered Marsh Seedeater is one of the several “Capuchino†seedeaters of southern South America. The species is threatened due to trapping for bird trade and habitat loss. Our project aims at improving the conservation status of the Marsh Seedeater in Uruguay, focusing on a key breeding area in Uruguay: the Bañados del Este. Raising local awareness is the key to success in our project.

The Taita hills are a key biodiversity area, but are threatened by extreme levels of deforestation and human impact. Several endemic species are restricted to a tiny and fragmented range. With this groundbreaking project, we attempt to restore critical habitat by using ecological techniques to reconvert exotic tree plantations into indigenous vegetation, which will provide badly needed new habitat for two Critically Endangered birds.

American Bird Conservancy (ABC) set out on an expedition to capture Black-capped Petrels, affix radio transmitters, and track the seabirds to new nesting locations that could be monitored and protected. Unfortunately, we were unable to capture any Black-capped Petrels, but did learn a lot about the difficulties of capturing the seabird and conditions necessary to do so.

Monitoring endangered bird species and establishing the biodiversity value of the Mesenia-Paramillo Nature Reserve by doing an inventory of birds, reptiles, amphibians, mammals and plants. Prevent negative impacts from communities by establishing suitable alternatives sources of income and developing projects strieving for food governance of the surrounding communities.

Forty-four juvenile hihi, Notiomystis cincta, were reintroduced to Bushy Park in March 2013 in an effort to establish a fourth population of this species on mainland New Zealand (three other populations occur on offshore islands). Despite relatively low initial survival among the females, the remaining birds and their offspring have all bred successfully. The population, although still small, is currently thriving.

This year, a new 600 hectare natural area reserve, Nakula, was designated by the State of Hawaii, and is currently being fenced. While no Kiwikiu (Maui Parrotbill) currently exist in this reserve, the goal is to restore the forest and reintroduce Kiwikiu to this part of Maui.
