Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation (Project No. 13055755) - Toothbilled pigeon or Manumea - Awarded $5,000 on July 10, 2013

The Tooth-billed pigeon or Manumea: found only in Samoa.

A recent intensive search in the Savai'i uplands confirmed that Manumea numbers are critically low and should be upgraded to critically endangered. It is essential that the locations of any populations of Manumea are identified so conservation efforts can be focussed. We aim to provide a detailed analysis of the status, distribution and ecological requirements of this globally threatened species.

First, we aim to survey sites in Upolu and Savai'i to determine where the remnant populations of Manumea are. We will do this by interviewing local people at key sites (e.g. Aopo, Sili, Mangigi, Fangaloa, Fagalii). The interview survey will also record vanishing traditional knowledge of the Manumea which otherwise will be lost. Following the survey we will target key areas using ground-based survey techniques and long term monitoring with automatic sound recorders. We will also conduct conservation education programs with the hope of reducing lose of this species through hunting.

This study will provide critical information so that conservation management can be targeted to key areas to allow for the successful recovery of this samoan endemic species.
